OpenAI responds to New York Times lawsuit, says “regurgitation” of content is a “rare glitch” and without merit

In December, the New York Times filed a complaint against OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, alleging copyright infringement and using Microsoft's journalistic material in ChatGPT's training data. In a response, OpenAI said they were surprised and disagreed with the case, adding that they thought their training methods qualified as fair use and provided a way to opt out. They also mentioned efforts to fix ChatGPT's content regurgitation problems.

1. Working with News Organizations: The company emphasises how it supports the news sector by forming alliances and providing AI technologies to help reporters.

2. Training and Fair Use: It provides publishers with an opt-out option but maintains that using online content for AI training is fair use.

3. Handling "Regurgitation" Problems: Although it is a rare problem, the company is attempting to reduce the occurrence of its AI models occasionally regurgitating content.

4. Conflict with The New York Times: The business claims it was taken aback by the newspaper's lawsuit, implying that their early conversations were fruitful and raising the possibility that the publication may have altered urges to yield certain outcomes.

5. Ongoing Commitment: Despite the legal action, the company is still dedicated to using AI to improve journalism, and it is willing to collaborate with news outlets such as The New York Times.

Kini Big Deal? (Why does it matter?)

Everyone is curious about how this will turn out. The New York Times (NYT) is a major force in the journalism and publishing sectors. If NYT prevails, a plethora of cases will be brought against OpenAI and all other AI businesses that train their models using public data. This will undoubtedly have an impact on everything. They're requesting that ChatGPT be shut down.

If OpenAI manages to get past this lawsuit, it will prevent smaller publications and creators from speaking up and allow it to claim an infinite amount of public data and perhaps build better models.
