SF Researchers Develop Smart Traps and Citizen Science Platform
Researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) are wielding the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize mosquito surveillance in Africa, aiming to ultimately combat malaria transmission. This project, funded by a multi-million dollar grant, tackles a major global health threat: malaria, a mosquito-borne disease disproportionately affecting Africa.
The project leverages two key AI-powered tools. The first is a citizen science platform called mosquitodashboard.org. This online platform empowers everyday people to contribute to mosquito surveillance. Users simply upload pictures of mosquitoes captured on their smartphones, and AI algorithms analyze the images to identify mosquito species. This real-time data helps researchers track mosquito populations and identify potential outbreaks.
The second tool under development is an AI-powered smart trap. This trap is specifically designed to target Anopheles stephensi, a dangerous malaria vector. The trap uses AI to automatically identify captured mosquitoes, providing critical data for researchers and mosquito control efforts. These AI-powered tools offer several advantages, including real-time data on mosquito populations, scalability for large-scale surveillance, and targeted control by focusing on the specific mosquito species most responsible for malaria transmission. The USF project not only tackles the immediate challenge of malaria in Africa but also establishes a framework for AI-powered mosquito surveillance that can be applied globally. This innovation has the potential to significantly improve mosquito control efforts and ultimately save lives.
