Africa No Dey Carry Last Again!
Four Major Updates From OpenAI
Yes o, Africa no dey carry last again! As the AI landscape dey shift, we sef dey follow am. You’re probably wondering what happened. Here’s what happened:
Last month, OpenAI officially rolled out its low-cost subscription tier, ChatGPT Go, and in a very empowering move, they made it available to ALL 54 African countries. You see say Africa sef no small!
For too long, as far as the AI space is concerned, African developers and users have been secondary targets. We have faced hurdles like high US dollar pricing and limited local access to cutting-edge tools. That era seems to be coming to a close now, judging by the recent focus on Africa by leaders in the AI industry.
The launch of ChatGPT Go across the entire African continent could be pegged as just a pricing update, but it isn’t. This launch came just weeks after Google offered free AI Pro subscriptions to students in select African countries and also after OpenAI launched an academy at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Clearly, these developments signal a shift in the way frontier AI companies view Africa. It is a huge statement that an industry leader designs a product specifically for affordability and access in our markets. It means we are doing something right, and it also signals that we should leverage these given opportunities.
Major Advantages of ChatGPT Go
Localization: Exchange rate risks and the prohibitive costs associated with international dollar payments have been barriers to access. But with this new tier, OpenAI is saying: “Calm down.” The update introduces local currency pricing, which means you can pay in your local currency (Naira, CFA, etc).
Pricing: This Go tier is priced at approximately R149/month in South Africa (roughly $8.50) and ₦7,000/month in Nigeria (around $4.71), reflecting a deliberate strategy to fit the cost of access to local economic realities. This represents an average 75% reduction compared to the standard ChatGPT Plus tier.

Power at Scale (10x More Capability): ChatGPT Go may be low-budget, but only compared to the other paid tiers of the model. It is not a stripped-down old model just because its price is lower. Independently, it offers significantly expanded access to high-demand features, now powered by the highly capable GPT-5 model. It promises 10x higher message limits with GPT-5, 10x more image generations and file uploads per day, and 2x longer memory for highly personalized, context-rich conversations. No be small thing!
The Visibility Signal: OpenAI's explicit commitment to ALL 54 nations signifies that our markets are central to global growth strategy. As Nick Turley, VP & Head of ChatGPT, noted, "Millions of people across Africa are already using ChatGPT to learn new skills, solve everyday problems, and start businesses. With ChatGPT Go, we want to make cutting-edge AI affordable and accessible." Our face show, our shoe shine!
Three Other Updates From OpenAI
The expansion into Africa is part of a much larger, aggressive strategic play by OpenAI to dominate the entire AI value chain. Here are a few other developments by the AI titans:
Microsoft and OpenAI Finally Say “I DO”: Microsoft and OpenAI have finally tied the knot, and their partnership is now valued at approximately $135 billion. The new agreement confirms Microsoft's status as the core frontier model partner and secures $250 billion in further Azure service commitments. (Check the Gist here!)

2. OpenAI Enters the Browser War with Atlas: It's 1997 all over again, and the Browser Gbasgbos is heating up! In a direct assault on Google’s territory, OpenAI recently launched Atlas, an AI-powered browser with a pervasive "Ask ChatGPT" sidebar and an Agent Mode (for paid users) that can autonomously complete complex tasks directly within the browser experience. (Check the Gist Here!)

OpenAI and AWS Sign $38 Billion Cloud Deal: OpenAI signed a landmark $38 billion cloud deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This record-breaking contract grants OpenAI access to hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs in AWS data centers, enabling them to diversify their compute infrastructure and secure the massive resources needed to scale their next frontier models(Check the Gist Here).

KINI BIG DEAL (Why Does This Matter?)
The last month has demonstrated that OpenAI is making massive, multi-faceted moves to secure its place as the foundational utility of the AI era.
But the one wey concern us na the democratization of that power. We are now a primary target of mainstream AI tools. The simultaneous rollout of low-cost access across Africa, coupled with the continent's youth demographic and unique problems, creates a powerful inflection point. We now have world-class tools at local and affordable prices.
We must now take agency and leverage this new visibility to build, innovate, and solve our own local challenges.
